Newsletter January 2019

Happy New Year to you all!! Well we survived 2018 and we are looking forward to both the fun and the challenges of 2019.

Just before Christmas we were contacted by Essex County Council about a new tourism initiative designed in conjunction with Kent and Sussex to attract overseas visitors to U.K. coastal areas. Particularly aimed at French and Dutch visitors because of their proximity to this part of the U.K. coast we were more than happy to be included in the advertising and have sent off relevant information in the hopes of promoting the historic town of Harwich and our Festival in particular.

Our Christmas Treasure Hunt on 28th December was the best attended ever, with over 25 groups searching the town for clues to the fiendishly difficult quiz. Despite the difficulty 2 teams scored 20 out of a possible 21, with a tie breaker making The Daces the absolute winners. And Luke, Evie, Elizabeth and Lily won the children’s prize. Over £260 raised for the Shanty Festival, but most importantly it was a fun event to add to the Harwich calendar and the Treasure Hunt has definitely become an event in its own right.

Team Daces - adult winners

The Lads & The Doctor - adult runners up

Luke, Evie, Elizabeth & Lilly - junior winners

7th January saw a Food and Catering meeting arranged at the Pier Hotel and was attended by most of the food outlets within the old town of Harwich. This meeting was an attempt to solve the problem of fewer places to eat than previously and more mouths needing food as the Festival expands.

Two more enjoyable fundraising events are coming up very soon. 13th February sees one of our popular Auctions to be held at the Alma Inn. There are some excellent Lots to bid for and a full list will be published nearer the time. We will be accepting postal and Facebook bids as well, so no worries if you do not live close enough to attend the actual event.

And finally a prestigious event on 2nd March.  A day workshop with Kimber’s Men, followed by an evening concert. Tickets for these events are already on sale via the website: www.harwichshantyfestival.co.uk and are selling fast. Check out the website for further details.
