April Newsletter

Hi {name}

There's just 6 months to go until the 2024 Harwich International Shanty Festival. And there is still lots to do!

Committee

We are currently very short of active committee members so if you are a keen Festival fan please consider giving up some time to help with the preparations. You do not even need to live locally, as many jobs are computer based. If you do not feel you can commit to becoming a full committee member then we are also looking for more volunteers on our “All Year Round Volunteers”  list. Volunteers on this list are contacted throughout the year as and when odd jobs come up and there is no obligation to help if you are unable to. We do hope that some of our 1,000 plus newsletter subscribers will feel able to help us out!

Fundraising Activities

As ever, we need to raise funds in order to deliver a first class Festival. Our Annual Cake’n’Shanty Sale is coming up on Sunday May 26th between 11.00 and 16.00. This annual event is universally popular as it features two of everyone’s favourite items – Cakes and Shanties! Please do come along to enjoy the atmosphere, listen to the entertainment and eat cake, and if you are able to help in any way, eg by baking a cake or serving on the day then let us know. And on June 12th the New Bell Inn monthly quiz will be in aid of the Shanty Festival so if you are local and able to attend, or even better bring a team of up to 6, then please do.

Food at the Festival Weekend

We are very pleased to see two new eateries open in Old Harwich, both of which will stay open into the evenings to serve food for festival goers. Claire’s Coffee Lounge in West Street and Deck 1853 on  Ha’Penny Pier are both on track to serve food over the festival weekend. But don’t wait until then. Go and check them out beforehand.

Obituary

And finally we are very sad to report the death of Wanda Weehuizen on Easter Saturday. For many years Wanda has been a familiar sight at sea and shanty festivals around the world, accompanying her husband Hans and so many of us are privileged to have known this lovely lady. We all send condolences to Hans and his family.
